Report before you leave the airport
Go to the airline's baggage service office near the carousel and file a damage report before exiting. Most carriers require domestic damage to be reported within 24 hours and international within 7 days, and reporting in person is the strongest position.
Photograph everything
Take clear photos of the damage, the baggage tag, and the bag as a whole. Keep your boarding pass and the baggage claim stub.
Get a written repair estimate
Airlines generally ask for an itemized estimate or invoice from a repair shop before they reimburse. We provide these same-day, including photographs and a statement of repairability.
Know what is excluded
Airlines usually do not cover minor cosmetic scuffs, damage to protruding parts such as straps or wheels on some carriers, or pre-existing wear. Read your carrier's contract of carriage so you know where you stand.
Follow up in writing
Submit the claim through the airline's online portal, keep your reference number and follow up by email if you do not hear back within two weeks.
